IT Indianapolis Peer Group Meeting Live Streaming Tonight!

By StrangeWork.com: Tonight I will be attending the second meeting of the IT Indianapolis Peer Group! Pat O’Day, the CTO of BlueLock, will be presenting his VM World conference presentation for us.

VM World Presentation Information “As one of the only 100% Virtualized Service Providers in the country, BlueLock has a unique and detailed perspective on many of the myths and realities of running virtual environments. Pat O’Day is BlueLock’s Chief Technology Officer and the architect responsible for the environments running in BlueLock’s facility today.”

BarCamp Indianapolis Tech Conference

By StrangeWork.com: I’ve challenged myself with a new mission. I want to help bring technology to Indianapolis. Sure we have technology companies here, but no conferences, no meet-ups, no events period. So I began my search and guess what I found?

Scott Wilder is working on organizing the first ever BarCamp in Indianapolis. What is BarCamp? In their own words:
BarCamp Indianapolis Logo
BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants.

Basically BarCamp is an “unconference” where all attendees must also contribute.

This is exactly the type of event I wanted to help get organized. I’m going to lend myself to helping out in anyway I can.

If your interested in attending BarCamp Indianapolis be sure to join the site and show your support.

How to Monetize Your Blog by MomsCashBlog.com

By StrangeWork.com: I noticed Mom from Moms Cash Blog stopped by the site. I submitted my site to be listed on her Wall of Fame and she posted it today!

MyBlogLog VisitorsMom, aka Krysti, has a daily show on Justin.tv during the week. Her show focuses on making money on your blog/site. I have to be honest, at first I thought it was a typical “get rich quick” site. I was nicely surprised.

Krysti enjoys helping others out. She has a ton of great information on how bloggers can start to monetize their sites. Her show offers tips, links, resources, and personal experience lessons for free! Her show is invaluable to the beginning bloggers looking to start float through the blogosphere.

To get a taste of her shows check out the Archive of MomsCashBlog on Justin.tv.

AdultFriendFinder.com sold for $1 Billion?

By StrangeWork.com: TechCrunch.com has posted a juicy rumor from one of their tipsters. According to their insider, AdultFriendFinder.com has been sold to Penthouse for somewhere between $500 million and $1 billion.

AdultFriendFinder.com LogoSo why does this news interest me so much? Glad you asked! Andrew Conru, CEO and Founder of AdultFriendFinder.com, is actually my cousin. I’m having dinner with him next month when I fly out to Oakland for the Raiders vs. Colts game. Should be fun to hear his side of the acquisition, if it’s done by then.

Let’s hope I have the same internet startup gene that my cousin has!

Google OpenSocial Launches Today, Hallelujah!

Google.com LogoBy StrangeWork.com: Google has announced a new project they are launching today called OpenSocial. OpenSocial is a set of three common APIs for building custom applications across multiple social networks. The three core functions and information will consist of:

  • Profile Information (user data)
  • Friends Information (social graph)
  • Activities (things that happen, News Feed type stuff)

At launch the participating social networks include Orkut, Salesforce, LinkedIn, Ning, Hi5, Plaxo, Friendster, Viadeo and Oracle. Obviously missing from this list is Facebook, Myspace, and Bebo. We can only hope that with the success OpenSocial is likely to see these networks will join in.

This is great news for us developers out there having trouble keeping up with the speed at which sites are releasing open APIs to interact with. Another huge benefit of a single site to manage all custom applications is OpenSocial does not have its own markup language. Developers can use normal javascript, html, and embedded flash elements.

Expect a more detailed write-up once I’ve had a chance to create some applications using OpenSocial.

You can access OpenSocial later today at:

Easily Increase Site Traffic Using StumbleUpon.com

By StrangeWork.com: Looking for an easy way to boost site traffic? Look no further than StumbleUpon.com. StumbleUpon is a browsing tool for sharing and discovering great websites based on keywords that you find interesting.

StumbleUpon.com LogoSimply install the toolbar and click Stumble to view high-quality pages matched to your personal preferences. StumbleUpon also gives you the ability to rate websites you like or dislike. By giving a site you enjoy a thumbs up, you enter that site into the StumbleUpon directory. This allows others users who are stumbling under the same keywords as your site the chance of viewing the page you stumbled.

The amazing part is it actually works! On Wednesday my post 10 Reasons why I’m buying a 2nd Generation Zune over any Apple iPod hit StumbleUpon. Since then I have received over 2,000 unique hits to that post from StumbleUpon users. Amazing!

StumbleUpon recently made some updates to its toolbar that shows website ratings next to search results in popular search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Windows Live.
