Joost.com: TV 2.0

Welcome to TV 2.0. Welcome to Joost.com. So what is Joost? Joost is a new startup created by the guys who started Kazaa and Skype.
Joost.com logo
Joost is a new way of watching TV on the internet.

Joost basically turns a PC into an on-demand TV without any need for additional equipment. Joost currently features hundreds of pre-recorded shows available to watch. While they are still in beta mode, Joost just announced passing the 1 million member mark earlier this month.

Internet TV sites are showing up all over the net, but with 150 developers and major funding Joost.com is most likely to dominate this market.

Moola.com: Got Cash?

A friend of mine sent me an invite to Moola.com a couple days ago. Moola takes game sites to a new level. Moola.com logo

Real Cash. Free to Play

Skeptical? So was I. Moola is pretty straight forward. You start out with ONE shiny penny! Now you have to wager your new shiny penny for a shot at TWO pennies! You then play simple flash based games like Ro Sham Bo and Hi Lo.

Each level you reach allows you to wager your entire stack against someone. There are currently 30 levels and the top payout is $10 million.

To date Moola has paid out $3,228,651 to players.

What’s the catch you ask? Between each round you have to watch a 15 second commercial and answer a question about the commerical you just watched.

Overall Moola.com is fun to try. If your into gambling you will probably enjoy this site, if not it’s fun to visit on occasion. Free money is good right?

KillerStartups.com – The next big thing

Trying to find the next big startup before it explodes into the mainstream? Enjoy discovering and testing new beta sites? Then KillerStartups.com is for you!
KillerStartups.com logo
KillerStartups.com is a user driven internet startups community.

Anyone has the ability to create a new account and submit any new startup they would like. A member of the KillerStartups.com staff will then review roughly 30 new startups a day for listing in their directory. New sites are voted on in a Digg style up/down voting process making it very easy to filter out the smaller sites.

The Top Ten List is a great way to see what types of startups are really taking off. I often use this site for design inspiration for new websites I am developing.

Investors/advertisers love finding new sites to work with and they love KillerStartups.com. Put this site on your list of easy and free ways to promote your new startup!

Yuntaa.com – Backup 2.0

Welcome to Backup 2.0! Yuntaa.com enters the online backup world with a nice 2.0 twist: Community!

Yuntaa.com logo

Yuntaa means alternative. An alternative way to backup, store, share and access everything you have on your computer today

Alternative huh? Alrighty, how so? Yuntaa allows members to share their files with buddies or make them publicly available. Members can also create digital photo albums, slideshows, and play videos. These are great features and I’m sure we can expect more in the near future.

Yuntaa is currently in beta mode and offering free 1GB storage accounts to new members. You can pay for more space as always, but the 1GB is enough to help you get a feel for their services.

StartupWeekend.com

While surfing Ustream.tv a few weeks back I began watching one of their featured shows Startup Weekend. StartupWeekend.com is a fairly simple idea:

StartupWeekend.com logo

Have you ever wondered what a group of highly talented and motivated people could accomplish in a weekend? Could they start a company from concept to completion?

Good question. The first StartupWeekend took place in Boulder, Colorado. 68 attendees worked for three straight days to develop VoSnap.com. Unfortunately VoSnap.com was not completed in time and has yet to launch.

Regardless of this setback, the StartupWeekend team made a valiant attempt at doing what most companies spend months or even years on. To date they have 6 more startup weekends planned all over the country. I look forward to seeing where these weekends will take us!

GrandCentral.com – Phone 2.0

I’m sure by now most of you have heard the news of Google buying GrandCentral.com. So what is GrandCentral?

GrandCentral.com logo

In their words:

With GrandCentral, you can be reached with a single number, answer a call at any phone you want, seamlessly switch phones in the middle of a call, and even know whether a call is important before you take it.

When you first create a GrandCentral account you are asked to pick a real phone number. Your phone number choices depend on what zip code you entered during registration.

I, of course, had to keep scrolling through the suggested numbers to find one that fit my “style”. I ended up with 317-973-0187. Cool right?

GrandCentral launched in September 2006, but Google wasted no time realizing these guys were on to something and quickly gobbled them up.

As of this post GrandCentral is invite only. If you would like an invite contact me and I’ll send one over!

With Google backing GrandCentral it’s safe to say we can expect big things in the future! Maybe even an API? Please?!

Wis.dm – Question Everything

Would you get sick of rice if you had to eat it almost every single day? Can there be life without TV? These and thousands of more pointless, yet addicting, yes or no questions can be found at a new web 2.0 site called wis.dm.

Wis.dm logo

wis.dm is an online community where you ask questions to the wis.dm crowd and get back useful answers.

Wis.dm was founded by Martin Clifford. Clifford was one of the founders of uDate.com, which was sold in 2003 for around $150 million. Wis.dm went public in April 2007 and is growing at a tremendous rate!

I just created a new account and already am in love with the simplicity of the entire site. The site has also incorporated a solid use of AJAX for the voting piece. Overal Wis.dm is a pretty amusing site and a good time waster if your in the market for one!

SnapFoo

Project X has been named, SnapFoo.com! We are well into the development stage of creating SnapFoo.com. I know there are still many programming nights ahead, but I feel really strongly about this new project. My lips are still sealed on any specifics, but there will be more info to come soon.

Make sure you sign-up with your email address to receive our official launch email.

Startup Weekend

I’ve been watching Startup Weekend today. The concept is simple – lock a bunch of geeks in a room for an entire weekend and develop a new startup company. They’ve been broadcasting live all weekend on Ustream.tv. It’s pretty amazing what a few geeks in a room can accomplish. Imagine the possibilities if my programming crew were local!
